I wrote to both her and Maria Cantwell stating basically that this is a flawed measure and will lead to increased spending AND if made mandatory would be unconstitutional. Here is her most considered reply…………..
Thank you for contacting me about S. 277, the Serve America Act. I am glad to hear from you. The Senate passed this legislation on March 26, 2009 with a vote of 79 to 19 and it has been sent to President Obama for signature. As you may know, the Serve America Act provides funding to expand national and community service opportunities for all Americans. The legislation will allow 175,000 more Americans to give a year of service to address specific national challenges such as strengthening our schools or increasing economic opportunities. It will also increase opportunities for service at any stage of life, from childhood to retirement, and will support social innovators with creative solutions to tackle our country’s most pressing problems. This legislation will also address funding for many of our nation’s vital service programs, including AmeriCorps, Learn and Serve, the National Civilian Community Corps, and the Senior Corps Programs. These organizations have proven successful in leveraging volunteers to address a variety of national needs including advancing health care, conserving natural resources and improving education. I believe that service is very important to our communities, and that resources should be devoted to encourage more volunteerism and service learning opportunities for people of all ages. The Serve America Act will give us an opportunity to strengthen national service programs and expand support for those who participate. Although we disagree on this issue, I want you to know I appreciate the time you have taken to share your views with me. I welcome your input on any issue that is important to you and hope you will keep in touch.
