H.R.3311 – To direct the Secretary of the Treasury to establish a pilot program to study alternatives to the current system of taxing motor vehicle fuels, including systems based on the number of miles traveled by each vehicle.

In reading this bill, on the surface it may look benign but it has in my opinion serious flaws that could and most probably would lead to huge privacy violations.  The only way that this could work would be to have a tamper-proof record of how many miles you drive.  That would be done using the same type of GPS technology that is currently in use by GM known as “On-Star”.  Now you can go ahead and think that the use of that technology would be a good thing, but what do you think about the government knowing everywhere your car goes?  Even if you are a completely law abiding citizen, do you want the government to know your habits, where you drive, what you do?  To me that is a huge intrusion and is tantamount to an illegal search.  Yea, I know it is stated that privacy is a consideration in this Bill, but do you believe the government will not intrude into your private business?  I know it will………..
