9-11, IMPRESSIONS FROM A CONSERVATIVE AMERICAN VET – A decade of pain and change

As I try to put pen to paper on this subject, I am full of mixed emotions.  I am so proud of America for the way its citizens have bounced back from this heinous act of cowardice.   I am proud of all the young men and women who answered the call and volunteered themselves to go into harms way to protect this great nation.  Many of which whom made the ultimate sacrifice and never returned home.  I am so proud of all the First Responders, Police and Fire Fighters who responded to the Towers to help others, who in turn, we lost.  I am proud of all the military personnel who were serving at the time of the attacks.  It is these people who put shoulder to wheel and made the things happen that needed to get done immediately.  It is these people who secured the nation from further attack in those days following the disasters.  I am proud of those on Flight 93 who, in the face of adversity, made up their minds not to go down without a fight and try and stop the hijackers from achieving their sick and twisted goal.  I am proud of all the brave men and women who when attacked, and a great many of them wounded, stood up, to help those who could not help themselves, saving countless other innocent lives.  It is because of this kind of spirit, that America truly is; “The Land Of The Free And The Home Of The Brave”. It is this indomitable American sense of toughness that has and will see America through these trying times. No doubt, America has been through quit a lot.  It survived the worst attack on is soil since Dec 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor.  On 9/11/01, almost 3 times the amount of people were killed than at Pearl Harbor.  It sickens me and I feel ill to this day every time this time of year comes around.

I remember that day like it was yesterday.  I was the Security Manager in charge of Security at the Pilots briefing area within the Fighter Wing.  I worked literally elbow to elbow with the F-15 Fighter Pilots in my Unit.  It was a normal Tuesday morning and my alarm had gone off as usual. As was my custom, I would turn the TV on to look at the news and get the local traffic conditions so I would know how to plan my commute to work.  I live across a major river from my Base and the commute can be a real pain sometimes because we only have to bridges spanning the river.  So watching the traffic in the AM was pretty important.  As the TV came on, both my wife and I were immediately struck by what we were seeing.  It was a live news feed from NY and the news people were talking about how a plane had crashed into one of the twin World Trade Center towers.  We watched for just a short time when out of nowhere, another plane flew into the picture and crashed into the other undamaged tower.  We watched in stunned silence as the plane crashed into the building, sending debris, fire and bodies everywhere.  At that instant, I knew we were under attack.  I jumped out of bed and threw on my uniform as fast as I could.  I threw a few things into my “ditty bag”, kissed the wife goodbye, telling her I don’t know when I’ll be back home, but not to worry, I’d call if I got the chance..  When I arrived at the Installation, as expected there was a calm and serious sense of urgency being displayed by all.  From the lowest Enlisted to the highest Officer, all were conducting themselves professionally and with purpose.  As my duties put me right in with the Fighter Pilots, I was able to witness them set about getting ready to answer whatever call came down.  Each Fighter Pilot was and is the consummate professional, each determined to do whatever it took to protect this nation from further attack.  Normally these guys were a pretty happy bunch.  Everyone poking fun at everyone else, each, with no shortage of Fighter Pilot confidence and bravado.  But today was completely different.  The fun time was over, and it was time to get down to business, and each one had their game face on.  It was a sight to see.  In short, I was and still am, awed by their presence.  They are totally inspiring and I am so proud to have been able to not only witness them at work, but I am proud to have been able to serve with them and along side of them .  They truly are “The Tip Of The Spear”.

In the days, weeks and months following 9-11, schedules began to slowly return to a more of a semblance of normalcy.  Schedules got more normalized, and were once again predictable.  There were still a lot of long hours, but as time went on, we began to realize that there may not be any further attacks involving aircraft.  You could almost hear a collective sigh of relief.  Believe me, to a man, there was not a single pilot who looked forward to have to shoot down an airliner full of innocent people.  That scenario was one only nightmares were made from….

However, now that we collectively look back in the years since 9-11-01, we have begun to realize that we may have paid a huge price for the apparent security we enjoy today.  Now don’t get me wrong, I appreciate all the work that our Military and Law Enforcement people are doing behind the scenes, all so we can go about our daily lives, not worrying about this or that blowing up in our faces.  But what really concerns me is the fact that when the Patriot Act was signed, (all well intended I’m sure) a lot of our civil liberties guaranteed by the Bill of Rights, were severely trod upon, if not completely bent, broken or wiped out.  Just look at what we citizens have to go through just to travel by air.  Rather than target the threat directly, the DHS chooses the political correct path and subject innocent, non threatening people to invasive if not illegal searches.  The DHS has used this crisis as an opportunity to categorize every citizen of this country as an “Extremist” of one kind or another.  Even the veterans, the very people who preserve or freedom, did not escape the indignity and insult of being looked upon as extremists.  The people in Congress and in the various law enforcement agencies have used this situation as an excuse to illegally spy on innocent people and illegally track and tap into all sorts of computerized data available via the web.  I dare say, our Republic has taken a hard hit, thank to the zealots in our government.  The really sad thing is, it didn’t have to go down that way.  All it would have taken was to do the right thing and deal with the problem directly and do everything possible to NOT encroach on our civil rights.

Since 9-11, in these last 10 years, I would like to believe that our government has learned volumes about our adversaries.  I would like to believe that many lessons have been learned and that it has been discovered that there are better, more ethical, less egregious ways to protect this nation that strike a better balance between security and our god given rights.  If this balance is not found, the terrorists will have won because one of their biggest goals was to change our way of life.  And at this point in time, we have changed, not for the better, and they have won.  We as a nation and a people cannot allow this to stand.  Our Elected Officials must insist that the rights guaranteed by the Bill of Rights are once again respected by the people whom we trust in high offices throughout this nation.  All those who fail to do so, must not be allowed to serve in the government.  They are the antithesis to freedom and liberty and they must go.  I can name many that are in the news on a daily basis today that fit that description.  It is these people who are more concerned about power, and gathering more, than civil rights.  It is these people I speak.  It is that simple.  Why?  Because a Conservative American Vet said so, that’s why………….

When the Patriot Act was initially enacted, there were a lot of provisions in it that were good, common sense ideas and precautions that seemed prudent at the time.  And, let there be no doubt, it has saved countless lives, however, I feel that this law must be revisited and revised.  I say this because what I was afraid would happen, has, at the hands of the TSA and Department of Homeland Security.  The situation has deteriorated in an even more accelerated rate since the Progressives have been in control these last couple of years.  Because of the over-zealous of these law enforcement types, the pendulum has swung so far to the left that the terrorist have actually won.  They have succeeded in turning our free society into the one they want.  Oppressive and controlling.  To the point where the American citizenry is being harassed by its own government under the guise of national security.  After all, it’s all for our own good right?  I mean, after all, our enemies want to kill us so bad, that they are planting bombs on the elderly, children, and lest us not forget, the pilots of the planes themselves.  It doesn’t matter what the background of these people is; An elderly woman from Portland Oregon who might be taking her fist plane ride to visit the grand kids, or for that matter, the kids themselves who might be taking their very first plane ride.  Wow, those people really need to be watched and scrutinized because…….?  And don’t forget the pilots, who most likely are military vets or even still serving in the Reserves, many of which have 1000s of hours of flight time.  And who, by the way, have been given clearances by the TSA AND, if they are members of the Air Guard, have at least a Secret clearance, but most likely, much higher.  Yet, those people must be screened every time they go to work because they pose such a continuing threat……  Don’t forget, the DHS has categorized all veterans as “Right Wing Extremists” as outlined in previous posts.

We as a nation, have reached the point of diminishing returns.  Our freedoms have been curtailed so badly, we are no linger a free society and are well on the road to having the same situation that is currently being employed in the UK.  If you don’t know about what is going on there, just do a google on surveillance in the UK and you will be amazed.

The 112th Congress must address this situation.  If we stay this course, the evil forces what want to destroy our nation will be rejoicing in the streets, for we have done their work for them.  Our own government will have, wittingly or unwittingly,  brought this nation to its knees, enslaving the citizens.  This is unconscionable and must be addressed, otherwise, THEY WIN……

This is more of the TSA malfeasance and oppression of the citizenry of America. The story says it all, but I will add; I want all you TSA people to hear this.   Do you remember what excuse the Nazi’s gave for their conduct during WWII?  No, I’ll be not.  They said “They were only following orders”.(sic)  That is how fascism and Marxism is spread. By people like you who are thinking only of yourselves, and not country.  I mean, after all, your only doing your job………You are a disgrace to democracy and you are a whore.  You sold yourself out to the lowest bidder, for a job……..I would sooner walk off the job and do something else, than tear down our democracy.  You have obviously made your choice.  We know what side of the fence you are on and it is not on the side of freedom.  There are better ways to get your job done.  Ways that does not treat everyone as a criminal.  Where is the probable cause?  When you people feel up Nuns and terrified children, you should know that this has gone too far.  Or, if you don’t have a conscience, I guess not….  That is my OPINION!

At face value this doesn’t look like a “bad thing”.  However, if you stop to think about it, the Patriot act has been used as a “tool” to violate the rights of countless innocent American citizens.  It is my belief that the Patriot Act needs to be revisited and rewritten in such a manner that not only makes it better, but does not violate The Constitution, Bill of Rights, and the spirit of the Declaration of Independence.  Below is a letter I have sent to my Senators stating just that.


It is becoming known that the “Jobs Bill” now making its way through the Senate has a reauthorization of the Patriot Act included as an add on.  It is my opinion and observation that there are many provisions in the Patriot Act which fly in the face of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence.  I would guess that the prevalent school of thought at the time being that the violation of the citizen’s rights is Ok as long as it is under the guise of “The war on terror”.  This “war” has been going on since 9/11/01 to present, and in that time frame, many rights outlined in our founding documents have been violated and innocent people have been harmed, and continue to have their rights violated to this day.  This all encompassing approach was adopted simply because “profiling” is not PC and the Federal Government does not want to appear to be discriminating against, or singling out a particular group of people.

In the almost 10 years since 911, the Federal Government has not only failed to bring this apparent “jihad” to an end, it is showing no signs of relenting or stopping, in spite of all the efforts and lives lost in this conflict.  I am a career military man and it is my heartfelt belief that this “war” can be fought without violating the rights of the citizenry.  The rule of law, as outlined in the Bill of Rights should be used in all instances to legally initiate and conduct the needed investigations of organizations and persons suspected of supporting, aiding and perpetrating these attacks.  If there is evidentiary information that would lead to solid, legal “probable cause”, justifying an investigation, then the necessary steps and proper warrants can be obtained and steps then taken to gather further evidence pertinent to the suspected crime.  Example, in nearby Portland Oregon, a local lawyer was unjustly investigated by the FBI because he was suspected of having some sort of ties to extremists, to which proved false and he was later absolved of all wrongdoing and subsequently the FBI was forced to acknowledge the fact that their over-reaching, over-zealous investigation was wrong and improper.  This wrong was not acknowledged though until the damage to his life and business was done.  This is the type of damage that is done to good people when a Law Enforcement Agency is allowed to act with impunity.

We are a nation of laws, Of the People, By the People and For the People.  This is a fact that our founding documents detail.  Our Founding Fathers took great pains to write these documents in such a manner as to “Guarantee” the rights of the citizenry because as stated in The Declaration of Independence, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Now, with all of this being said, I do believe that there may be some out of the ordinary tools needed to fight this war and keep America safe.  I do believe however, that “in concept”, the Patriot Act was a good idea that now needs to be refined and redefined so that it becomes a truly good, useful, legal, Constitutional tool, that does not violate basic rights.  I believe that the Patriot Act is so important by itself, that it should not be re-authorized simply as an “add-on” because it needs to be examined, debated and rewritten as a stand alone Bill.  It should not be passed in the manner being attempted now and we voters in your District are watching your handling of this issue.  I urge you to press for the removal of this add on from the “Jobs Bill” and move to have this single issue brought before the Senate in an open and transparent manner, thus legislating in the spirit and manner as intended by our Founding Fathers when they established our Representative form of governance “Of the People, By the People and For the People”.

As we sit back now and take a deep breath, more and more information is coming out about the horrific shooting at Ft. Hood Texas. As a 29 year Military Police Vet, I have a unique and pretty clear impression on how things happened and how people reacted when the gunfire erupted. I can remember back to all those days in the military, of getting up every morning and going through my normal routine as I prepared for duty each day. I have to admit, as the years rolled on and routines set in, you become somewhat oblivious to the potential each day may bring.

Each Base has its own pulse, so to speak. Even as large a Base as Ft. Hood has its own unique heartbeat that everybody, over time begins to move in time with. Nov 5, 2009 was no exception. All who work on the Base reported to duty as always, not knowing their lives were about to be changed forever. Her day started as all the rest. She awoke to the usual morning alarm. She rousted herself from her warm bed and went about her normal morning routine. This daily routine, as all the rest most likely included getting the rest of the household ready for the coming day. You know, the kids up and at ‘em, polished and fed for the morning and the sack lunches made for the upcoming school day. The daily wash maybe prepared for when she got home and the dishes put in the dishwasher. She puts on her uniform as always. She does her hair, and put her game face on. With all finished and secure at the house, she leaves for another day on patrol. Another routine day…….

She reports to the “Cop Shop” like any other day. She most likely knows what duties she has as the duty roster has indicated the day before. She reports to the Arm Room to draw her weapons and other equipment. She Bs’s with the rest of the “guys” and stands formation as always. All are briefed on the current happenings and then all are released to go about their assigned duties. Little did anyone know this little gal would be a hero at the end of the day and all their lives would be changed forever. Most likely she was the first on the scene and was then faced with the ultimate decision. Shoot or not shoot. Her decision was the correct one. She took aim with her service pistol and did what she had to do. She pulled the trigger, successfully stopping a homicidal maniac bent on killing as many soldiers as he could. Unfortunately though, she too was wounded in the firefight and went down. Fortunately for her, her aim was good and the assailant stayed down, saving many more that would have been otherwise wounded or killed.

But, she is not the only hero who took action in this terrible incident. There were so many others who also stepped up and were heroic in their actions. Fortunately, there were many Soldiers standing nearby then the shooting started and the people began to fall. Of course, the first instinct is to take cover when you hear gunfire and I am sure that’s exactly what happened. Like all good Soldiers and as they are trained, as soon as each one was able to assess their situation, began to render first aid to all those others that were wounded. Every Soldier is trained in first aid and without this training, many more would have died. Each and every man and woman who rendered this life saving first aid are by the same measure, heroes too. Had they not been there, many more would have died. We now know her name. It is Sergeant Kimberly Munley. God bless her and all who responded.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who were wounded and especially to the families who lost a loved one in this tragic, senseless act.

Now, with all that being said, I want to interject what I think about this Islamic lunatic.  Knowing what I know after being in the military as a Military Police Officer for 29 years, there is one very glaring inconsistency with this whole story about him not wanting to be deployed to Iraq.  It is being reported that this guy counseled returning troops from the middle east battle zones.  This is a “mental health” service that helps returning soldiers “decompress” from battle.  Him being intimately involved and familiar with the mental health service knew that all he had to do to stop him impending deployment was to tell one of his fellow Doctors that he was having suicidal thoughts.  Even if he wasn’t….  That act alone would have stopped the deployment.  He would have been evaluated and could have been discharged.  But that didn’t happen.  Why?  I think it is because he knew what he was doing and it was a premeditated terrorist attack by a Jihadist.  It’s that simple…….The DOD must stop all this “pc” crap and thoroughly investigate all Muslims in the military.  That is the only way.  Being politically correct had made this horrific event possible.  Plain and simple, being “pc” has gotten 13 people killed. Do we need another incident with more innocent people being killed?

It is now being learned that “The ‘Bama” has signed into law, a new law that establishes every 9/11 as “National Day of Service”.  This act came out of the blue and is a direct insult to this nation and to all who lost loved ones and friends in this horrible, despicable act. This was my generations Pearl Harbor and Obama intends to rob all of us of the annual honors and remembrances that are due to these victims every year.  He is now overtly taking all steps to re-make the United States into his own image and agenda by perpetrating this unbelievable act of slander and disrespect.  This is so unacceptable, I am speechless.  Click the pic for the details.  It makes me sick to my stomach……

My childhood friend of 31 years visited my home on base, in Quantico, a few months after I gave birth to my first baby. As we took a leisurely stroll one evening through the lingering humidity of early September, I explained to her how different military life is from the world in which we grew up in San Francisco. We passed rows of colorful houses on the tree-lined, manicured blocks and gazed at the playgrounds around the neighborhood, ready to welcome the children of the officers who live there. American flags hung from virtually every front door. The occasional “My daddy fights for your freedom” bumper sticker adorned some vehicles. As we looped around the bend toward my house, my friend turned to me and asked, “How do you accept what your husband does for a living?” I glanced at her, startled. “What do you mean?” I asked. “I guess I just don’t know how to accept it. I don’t believe in war,” she responded, matter-of-factly.

My husband is an infantry captain for the U.S. Army. This week, he left on his sixth combat deployment with the 2nd Infantry Division’s Stryker Brigade. He is to be gone for one year to launch Stryker vehicles into Afghanistan under President Obama’s new surge. My husband served with the 1st Ranger Battalion in Savannah, Ga., for 2 1/2 years before attending the Marine Corps’ Expeditionary Warfare School. We have been married for three years; he’s been deployed for half that time. My husband loves his country and serves it proudly, and for that I love him. Is being an Army wife easy? Not at all. The moving, the worry, the separation, the danger, the evening news and the politics of having your spouse risk his life for wars that most of us don’t understand or don’t accept certainly does stir something within me. Since we married, I have been introduced to and lived in a community of honorable people. Do I have everything in common with them? No, but I learn from them every day. Military life and married life have been an adventure; overall, they have most definitely taught me to truly value the vows I took on my wedding day. As an Army wife, I’ve learned the meaning of the expression “HUA” (heard, understood, acknowledged). I can now recognize an improper salute. I basically understand rank and protocol. I am beginning to know the acronyms, even though they seem to be endless. I’ve watched my husband parachute and fast-rope out of planes while training. I have attended military balls. I have hugged him goodbye and wondered way too many times if I would ever hug him again. I have seen soldiers break down. I have seen wives break down. I have made several friends and left several friends. I have been to an award ceremony at which a young Ranger received a Purple Heart; he lost a leg, but he stood proudly in front of the audience. I have heard horror stories about wives receiving word that their husbands were killed in action and I have thanked God that it wasn’t my husband. I still get butterflies when I pick him up after each deployment. That feeling is indescribable. So how do I accept what my husband does for a living? Quite easily. He serves his country and does so courageously, next to other respectable men and women. He represents America with the utmost dignity while overseas. The Army is lucky to have him, and so am I. While people sit back and criticize what soldiers do, my husband risks his life over and over again. Let’s be honest: It’s a job that most people don’t want. Many don’t think about it because other people do it. Other people do it. Instead of trying to figure out how to accept or justify or understand what my husband does because you don’t believe in war, I’d beg you to know that no one wants war; no one likes war. We’d all love a perfect world, but we do not live in one. Our country is at war; two of them, actually. Soldiers, my husband being one of them, have to deploy. We, as families, have to worry and wait and hope.

I believe that the next time somebody asks me how I accept what my husband does for a living, I will simply tell that person to appreciate my husband’s service and to enjoy his or her freedom while my husband does what his country asks of him.

“THE ‘BAMA” SAYS THE US (aka PRESIDENT BUSH) WENT “OFF-COURSE” IN THE WAR ON TERROR (911) Here are the facts of the matter…..

I just cannot sit by and let that assertion go by without adding my voice to this. I will cut right to the chase and not dance around the facts. Fact #1. On Sept 11, Four large commercial aircraft full of people and fuel we hijacked by terrorists bent on Jihad. Fact #2. One of these aircraft did not fulfill it’s mission but crashed in Pennsylvania killing all aboard. Two of these aircraft were flown into the World Trade Center towers in New York killing close to 3000 people and taking down those buildings and many others surrounding the center. One was flown into the Pentagon in Washington DC, killing 189 plus 54 passengers not including the hijackers were killed.

I was active duty military at the time of the attack and learned of it when I woke up that morning and turned on the television like any other day. As I lay there, trying to wake up a little, the screen was filled with the image of the Trade Center billowing gargantuan billows of black smoke. The reporters were in the heat of the battle, reporting what had just happened a short time ago and what was happening now. As I watched this tragedy unfold, I could only think that this had to be some kind of huge, terrible accident and somehow all of this mayhem would be brought under control and order would be restored. Little did I know more terror was on the way. As the TV picture changed from camera to camera, the view stopped on a wide overview shot of the scene. Just then, another airplane came into view and flew directly into the other tower. I was shocked straight up in bed, not believing what I had just seen. I sat there stunned for a couple of minutes, and then I jumped out of bed and threw my Uniform on as fast as I could, knowing now, that we were under attack. At that time I was a Security Manager for a F-15 Fighter Squadron Operations Group and knew what was about to happen at the Base and with our Pilots. I gave the wife a quick kiss good-by, grabbed my “go-bag” and told her I didn’t know when I’d be home again because I knew 24hrs ops were now being generated. As we all know now, all commercial and private aircraft were grounded immediately. All ACC Fighter Wings were tasked with flying Combat Air Patrols (CAPs) all over the United States. Those CAPs were flown for a long time. Rules of engagement had to be devised and modified as needed in order to deal with the possible threat of another hijacked plane. This was a difficult time as the Fighter Pilots could conceivably be called on to shoot down a plane full of civilians. This fact was not taken lightly and proved to be a major source of stress for all. Fact #3. After the initial shock wore off and the gravity of the long-term problem became apparent, President Bush went to his advisors and looked at all the options he had at his disposal. All the constitutional concerns were addressed AND Congress was briefed. The Congress granted war powers authority to the President and a “War on Terror” was officially and legally declared. Congress authorized the required moneys to be appropriated and spent on the needed response and subsequent battles since in Afghanistan and Iraq. NOTE AGAIN: Congress approved all of this. President Bush with his advisors, both Military and legal, devised plans and programs that would be needed to protect the citizens at home, thusly The Department of Homeland Security was created. It’s mandate was to protect the people of this nation by Constitutionally legal means and by those means APPROVED BY CONGRESS. Fact #4. To this date, there has not been a single successful attack within the United States since 911. There are many thousands of dedicated patriots working behind the scenes making sure we can go about our daily lives without worry. So much so, I believe people have completely lost sight of what has happened and what’s being done to protect us. I for one will never forget the images of people jumping out of the Twin Towers because there was no other choice. I will never forget the images of the planes hitting the towers and debris and bodies flying in all directions. I will never forget the images of the Twin Towers, one by one, burning, failing and falling to the ground. I will never forget the knowledge of all the innocents in those buildings and the First Responders fighting their way up to rescue them. I will never forget the knowledge that those people were literally vaporized and turned to dust. I will never forget the following months of the retrieval of what could be found of the victims. I will never forget the flag draped stretcher for each piece of a person they could find. I will never forget the stories a friend of mine who’s office at the Pentagon was destroyed by the aircraft and ensuing fire. And I will never forget that this was MY generations Pearl Harbor. Now we are faced with a population that has been hoodwinked into believing that President Bush is the Devil incarnate and that all his actions were wrong, illegal and unethical. For the record, water boarding is not illegal and “torture” was never done. It wasn’t then and it isn’t now. Why do I know this? Because Congress was briefed on all of this, and Congress did not object, to include Speaker of the House Pelosi. Let me ask a question here. What body of people in this country has the authority to make laws? Answer, CONGRESS that’s who! They didn’t and they haven’t made it illegal and categorized it as torture to this day. These lies are being spread and perpetuated by none other than our new President. To date, I have not heard him support his predecessor in any way. He has made “sport” of tearing down GW and this nations actions when in a time of declared war and fighting for survival. He has not put forward any logical plan that moves this country forward in any way or show any support for the military. He revels in partisanship and has the audacity of apologizing to the world for our actions. (We have NOTHING to apologize for) He gives our enemies more rights than the citizens he is supposed to be protecting and he is working to fundamentally change our way of life never intended by our forefathers and is not preserving and protecting the Constitution as he swore to do. He appears to be infatuated with the “trappings” of the office and revels in the “Pomp and Circumstance” and lavish adulation wherever he goes. So much so, it appears that he is so busy doing appearances and having audiences at the WH, someone else must be minding the store…….So when he says, “The US went off course fighting terror”, he better take a real close look in the mirror. It is he who has “lost his way” and is “off course”, not the United States of America.  How do I know this/  Because I AM a Conservative American Vet.                Click the pic to go to the lie of a story…….
